Compassion: How we are respectful of others/ how we care about ourselves mentally and physically/ the way we view others and ourselves/ how staff support families emotionally and practically/ how do we ensure relationships between all stakeholders are strong?

Aspiration (being incredibly important for children in one of the most deprived areas of the country!): What do children strive to be when they are older? Do children try their best within all learning activities? Expectations of families to their lives and their children’s/ How do we improve our local community? How do children strive to become better people?

Collaboration: TEAM ASB (Staff/ Children/ Families/ Community and Church) work together to form a cohesive unit, wrapping around the children/ how do children work alongside others to improve learning outcomes/ how does the school work with families to improve opportunities for learning for all stakeholders/ working with other hub schools to improve opportunities for all.

Ready – is about being ready to learn. Another word might be preparedness and there are many stories of Jesus preparing himself for difficult times by taking himself away, praying etc.

Respectful – this can link back to the beatitudes, valuing everyone in every situation but also as one of the 10 commandments, Love Thy neighbour as thyself.

Safe - thinking about self and others, awareness – how we use this to be prayerful.

Theological Underpinning

Our underpinning is Chapter 5, Jesus’ sermon on the mount, from Matthew’s gospel. The core verses relating to our vision are framed in the context of Jesus setting out the Beatitudes (meaning – blessed are they who…) which continue to be a model of social and spiritual justice in society. From a Christian perspective, the Beatitudes teach that people are blessed even in hard times because they will receive eternity in heaven. We will all benefit from reflecting and learning more deeply on this. The Church of England calls them “perhaps the most important, subversive and revolutionary text in the Bible”

Verses 14-16 are the heart of our Vision statement. We want the school to be a beacon of light for the community, where people can work ‘collaboratively’ to empower and support one another.

14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Beatitudes

  • Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
  • Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
  • Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
  • Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness,
    for they shall be satisfied.
  • Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
  • Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
  • Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.
  • Blessed are those who suffer persecution for righteousness' sake,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

When you visit All Saints Babbacombe Church you will notice that our symbol appears on the cast iron metal work embedded in the floor. The symbol represents God's infinite love, because like our badge, God's love for us has no beginning and no end.
